For those new to the world of denim, selvage (or selvedge) is derived from the term "self edge". It denotes the natural end of a fabric roll that prevents unraveling. Selvage is often woven with contrasting colored threads, such as red, orange and green (Rainbow). Producing border fabric on traditional Japanese looms requires exceptional craftsmanship and time. This careful process results in high-quality fabrics with distinct properties. The slower pace of the shuttle looms puts less tension on the yarn, creating naturally softer denim with unique slubs. These features contribute to better fade patterns over time.
